Dehydration Is Sneaky – Here’s How to Watch Out
June 11, 2023
Water is a big deal. While it is essential to life as we know it, it also does a lot for oral health specifically by flushing away food particles and stimulating saliva production. Losing just 1 to 2% of the water in your body can impede your basic functioning, and thirst is not always the most dependable way to know how much water you need. Dehydration can really sneak up on you, and knowing its signs can keep you feeling well.
What Are Some Signs of Dehydration?
Dry mouth is a big indicator of dehydration. A lack of water leaves your mouth dry because your body cannot produce saliva without it. Saliva plays a critical role in oral cleanliness by washing the teeth clean of food particles and bacteria. It also reinforces your teeth by bathing them in calcium, fluoride, and phosphate.
What many people don’t realize is that bad breath can also be the result of dehydration. A lack of saliva interrupts the mouth’s cleaning process, allowing bacteria to grow and stink up the place while they cause tooth decay. Though bad breath is not a sure sign of dehydration, it might mean you should drink a glass of water or two.
Muscle cramps or spasms can result from dehydration and electrolyte depletion. The nervous system cannot regulate itself properly without minerals like sodium and potassium. This can result in pain or tightness in the muscles, and it can sneak up on you suddenly. If you notice your muscles spasming or experience a painful charley horse, it’s likely to do with you needing more water.
What Can I Do About Dehydration?
Foods and liquids with high water content are dehydration’s number one enemy. Fruits and vegetables like melons and cucumbers are great sources of water. If you worry you might be dehydrated, avoid beverages with caffeine as the drug tends to make the body eliminate water more quickly.
Hydration is even more critical if one engages in strenuous exercise. One should take care to hydrate before, during, and after working out. You should go so far as to start hydrating in the hours before an intense workout. Beverages containing both water and electrolytes are excellent for longer workouts.
Hydration is a key component of both oral and general health. Though dehydration can sneak up on you, it is not impossible to anticipate and prevent it. By watching out for the signs, you can avoid dehydration and feel great no matter what you’re doing.
