Help! Tips for Handling Some of the Most Common Problems with Braces
March 18, 2024
Wearing braces can be exciting because of what you can expect your new smile to look like when finished with treatment. It can also produce a love-hate relationship because of the common problems that can occur along the way (i.e., discomfort, soft tissue irritation, and even tooth sensitivity). If you want to make sure your orthodontic treatment is more enjoyable, here are a few helpful tips to consider while on your path to a straighter smile.
Your Teeth Feel Sensitive
Immediately following a visit to your orthodontist, you may notice that your teeth feel more sensitive. This is normal because of the changes that occur during these visits, such as wire tightening. Naturally, your pearly whites will experience some slight discomfort because of the added pressure, which can also be felt when attempting to eat or drink anything hot or cold.
To avoid the sharp pain associated with tooth sensitivity, make sure to take an over-the-counter pain reliever. You can also use a topical ointment that helps to temporarily numb the specific area(s) of your mouth.
Your Soft Oral Tissues are Irritated
Wire brackets and wires are often not the most comfortable to wear. Apart from the applied pressure placed on your teeth, the protruding metal can also rub against your mouth’s soft oral tissues. Whether it is your gums, cheeks, lips, or tongue that bear the brunt of the damage, it’s important to keep pain-relieving products nearby.
When you feel as if there might be a sore developing, you can use orthodontic wax to place over the extended bracket. This will create a barrier between your braces and your soft oral tissues for a more comfortable experience.
You Have a Broken Wire or Bracket
Although designed to be durable, metal brackets and wires can be broken if too much pressure is applied.
This can occur while playing sports, engaging in no-contact physical activity, or even biting into a hard piece of food. When this happens, it’s important to call your orthodontist right away. You can use orthodontic wax in the meantime to cover the area and minimize damage to your soft oral tissues.
You Experience Jaw Pain
As your teeth shift over time, you will notice that the applied pressure can begin to create pain throughout your jaw. While it might seem as if discomfort is just something you’ll have to deal with, it is not. Instead, you can take an over-the-counter pain reliever and use a cold compress to alleviate soreness and achiness.
You should know that your temporomandibular joints should not cause you problems. If they do, make sure to call your orthodontist so that they can check the issue and make appropriate changes.
These are just a few of the many common problems associated with wearing braces, but with these helpful tips, you can expect a less bothersome experience as you continue on your way to achieving a beautiful, straighter, healthier smile.
