Braces Survival Kit: What Items Should You Keep with You?
October 18, 2024
Once your orthodontist places your traditional braces on your teeth, you never have to worry about forgetting to wear them. However, what you might forget are the basic supplies that you need to take good care of your smile throughout your treatment. What essential items should be included in your braces survival kit, and why are they so important? This blog post explains.
Water
Braces might make your mouth feel drier than usual, so keeping a bottle of water on hand can be an easy way to stay hydrated and encourage saliva production. Extra tip: Find an attractive reusable water bottle that fits both your lifestyle and aesthetic preferences. If you like it, it will be easier to remember to use it!
Toothbrush and Toothpaste
It is wise to brush your teeth after every meal when you are wearing braces. Travel-sized toothbrushes are inexpensive and easy to toss into a small carrying case along with other oral hygiene basics. Do not forget to include some toothpaste as well!
Floss and Interdental Brushes
Cleaning around your brackets and wires is important for the well-being of both your braces and your oral health. Floss or floss picks can be used to clean the spaces between your teeth, while interdental brushes can be very useful for cleaning beneath your wires.
Orthodontic Wax
From time to time, you might find that your braces irritate the soft tissues in your mouth. Orthodontic wax can create a barrier that reduces your discomfort. Your orthodontic team will likely provide you with some wax, but it is also easy to purchase at pharmacies and online retailers.
Mirror
Food might sometimes get stuck in your braces. Carrying a compact mirror with you can allow you to make sure that your smile is clean after each meal.
Lip Balm
Your lips might get a bit dry when you have braces. A moisturizing lip balm can prevent your lips from getting too uncomfortable. Lots of people prefer unpigmented lip products, but if you want a touch of color, that is perfectly fine. To prevent pigment from getting on your braces, you might try wiping the inner rim of your lips with a finger.
Is your brace survival kit ready to go? Keeping it with you can make it easier to have a smooth orthodontic treatment experience from beginning to end.
