Survive the Bite on Halloween Night: 5 Tips to Keep Your Invisalign Treatment on Course
October 27, 2023
Halloween is a night of sweet indulgence and spooky celebrations. But it can present unique challenges for those straightening their teeth with Invisalign. While the draw of tasty treats is hard to resist, maintaining your Invisalign treatment routine is important!
If you want to have your candy and eat it too, continue reading. You’ll find five tips to help you navigate Halloween night without rerailing your progress.
1. Keep Water at Your Side
It may not seem very spooky-spirited, but water is awesome. It will wash away the bacterial film on your teeth and break down candy that might get caught in between. Water also stimulates the glands that produce saliva.
While you may not want to drool like a werewolf, dry mouth is a problem. It allows the bacteria in plaque to spread faster, causing more damage. Saliva is the answer to this problem, keeping your mouth moist and fighting the acid that plaque produces.
2. Plan Out Snack Time
For your Invisalign treatment to really enhance your fangs, you’ll need to wear them for 20-22 hours a day. This unfortunately also includes Halloween night. Therefore, it is important to plan your “indulgence hours” carefully.
Pick out a timeframe to take off your aligners to eat and have some snacks, then brush and snap your aligners back into place.
3. Don’t Snack with Your Aligners On
You may think that you’re being clever by simply having your candy while you wear your aligners. However, you’re doing more harm than good. Invisalign is known for being like the invisible man – undetectable. When you eat with them on, not only are you risking damage to them, but also discoloration.
4. Carry a Dental Kit
A great idea, especially if you’re going to a gathering on Halloween is to disguise a dental kit and carry it with you. This kit would include your aligner case, a travel-sized toothbrush, toothpaste, and some floss. Once you complete your “indulgence hours” mentioned earlier, you can clean your teeth and put your aligners back in.
5. Brush Before Bed
More brushing? Of course! You can’t participate in the most sugar-filled holiday of the season and not expect a little extra care. You’ll need to wear your aligners overnight, but first, you must ensure that your mouth is clean. Brush for at least two minutes, floss, and clean your aligners.
So, it’s not that complicated to continue doing the right thing for your treatment while also having fun. Taking a little time to plan out your evening and making sure you keep your teeth clean is the key. It might also be a good idea to visit your orthodontist after Halloween to get a progress check. They’ll be pleased as pumpkins to see your smile!
