If you are frustrated by your somewhat crooked teeth or gaps in your smile, you’re probably considering orthodontic treatment. In the past, traditional braces were used to address such issues. Today, however, advancements in materials and technology have led to a more discrete option. Invisalign has helped millions like you achieve a beautifully straight smile without the need for metal brackets. With something as important as your teeth, however, you want to be sure you’re making an educated decision about which method works best for you. Keep reading to learn about 4 commonly asked questions about Invisalign.

Question #1: How Does Invisalign Work?

This method consists of wearing clear aligner trays that are customized to fit snuggly over your teeth and gently move them into their ideal positions. Each set is worn 20 to 22 hours per day and will be replaced with new aligners in 1 to 2 weeks, depending on your treatment plan. As your teeth move, new trays are required to account for the changes.

Question #2: How Long Does Invisalign Treatment Take?

Generally, this technique doesn’t take as long as traditional braces. Invisalign treatment usually takes a year, though it could be somewhat longer or shorter depending on a few factors. Teeth that require more work may need a longer period of time to shift, for example. Also, if you have an overbite or underbite that is being addressed, you can expect a more extended timeline.

Question #3: Will Invisalign Hurt?

One typical concern is whether this technique is painful. While new patients have reported some initial soreness while adjusting to their aligners after the first week, you shouldn’t feel much discomfort after that. The process of getting your teeth moving when they’ve been still for so long can naturally cause some aches. Once you’re accustomed to them, though, you might find you even forget that they’re there.

Question #4: How Do I Keep Invisalign Clean?

It’s important that you consistently remove bacteria and debris from your Invisalign to avoid discoloration. After all, what good is an invisible solution if it starts looking drab and dingy? There are several things you can do to keep your pristine including:

  • Brushing them regularly. At least twice a day, you should remove your Invisalign for a thorough scrub. Use a gentle toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste to avoid scratching the trays.
  • Removing them for meals. If you keep your Invisalign in your mouth while you eat and drink, they can be stained by dark foods or worn down by acidic ingredients. Take them out for meals and replace them when you’re finished.
  • Dropping bad habits. If you smoke cigarettes or chew tobacco, you’ll find it’s nearly impossible to keep your aligners clear. You might want to consider kicking the habit altogether!
  • Using cleaning crystals. You can purchase special cleaning crystals designed to remove bacteria and germs from your Invisalign. Simply sprinkle them into water, stir to dissolve, and place your aligners in the solution for 15 minutes.

If you have additional questions that haven’t been answered, feel free to ask your orthodontist.
