Why Would I Need Invisalign Refinements?
November 10, 2023
Recent decades have seen Invisalign become more and more popular. Unlike traditional braces, which have visible metal parts and require certain dietary restrictions, Invisalign is removable and virtually invisible to the casual observer. While Invisalign can be an excellent way to bring a smile into a better alignment, it is sometimes necessary to correct the course of orthodontic treatment. Here’s how Invisalign refinements are used to get a treatment back on track.
How Does Invisalign Work?
Invisalign treatment involves a sequence of clear aligners customized to fit your teeth. The patient must wear each set of aligners for at least twenty hours every day for two weeks before switching to the next set. Each set is designed to move the teeth into slightly better positions. If the patient does not wear their Invisalign clear aligners sufficiently every day, their teeth may not move quickly enough into their new positions, causing delays in treatment. Treatment may also be delayed due to unforeseen dental developments. In some cases, new aligners will need to be made to get the treatment back on course.
How Do Invisalign Refinements Work?
Sometimes, a patient needs extra sets of aligners to get their teeth moved into their proper positions. If your orthodontist determines that your treatment needs a little help to stay on track, they will measure your teeth again. This will provide the data necessary for new trays to be manufactured. These new trays will work just like your normal ones. They will need to be worn for at least twenty hours every day and will have the same hygiene requirements.
Requiring refinements can cause significant delays in treatments. Depending on how many new trays you need, the treatment may be extended by three to six months.
While needing Invisalign refinements can be inconvenient, they are not the worst thing that can happen during the process. A patient may be perfectly compliant with wearing their clear aligners and still require refinements due to unanticipated circumstances. Invisalign refinements can get a patient back on track to a more ideal smile that they will be able to enjoy for a lifetime.
