Do Your Teeth Feel Loose? Here’s Why That Can Happen When You’re Wearing Braces
July 12, 2024
Traditional metal braces have allowed millions of people to correct misaligned bites so they can enjoy having straighter, healthier smiles. While this orthodontic method has been tried and proven to be effective over many decades, you may experience some discomfort while wearing them. Here’s why your teeth may feel loose when you wear braces, why this is completely normal, and a few tips for keeping yourself comfortable.
How Do Braces Work?
Braces work by applying constant pressure to the teeth through the archwires attached to the brackets, gradually shifting them into straighter and healthier positions. Periodontal ligaments hold the teeth in place in the gums, and these connective tissues are able to stretch and contract when a tooth moves in its socket. When you wear braces, these ligaments are forced to change the way they hold the teeth in place until they adapt to their new positions.
Why Do My Teeth Feel Loose with Braces?
Until the teeth have been set in their new alignment, they may feel loose since your periodontal ligaments and jawbones are being stressed by the pressure braces exert. This feeling may be especially noticeable for the first few months, but it will fade as your teeth move closer to their ideal positions. You may also experience a feeling of looseness for several days after having your braces tightened.
While this sensation can be strange, it is no cause for alarm since it is normal during orthodontic treatment. The teeth will feel increasingly normal as they adjust to their new positions and will no longer feel loose after the braces are removed.
How Can I Manage This Feeling of Looseness?
There are several ways you can help yourself stay comfortable if your teeth feel loose when wearing braces. One way is to make a saltwater solution by mixing one teaspoon of salt with eight ounces of room temperature water and rinse and gargle with it for several minutes. If the discomfort is especially troublesome, you may wish to try using over-the-counter pain medication for relief. If you find that your wires and brackets are irritating your cheeks and lips, placing dental wax over them can help you speak, smile, and chew more comfortably.
While wearing braces isn’t always easy, complying with your orthodontist’s instructions can lead to magnificent results. Until then, knowing why your teeth feel loose and taking measures to manage the issue can help you stay comfortable and in good spirits.
