Is Your Child a Good Candidate for Phase One Orthodontics?
March 11, 2022
Orthodontic treatment is used to correct and prevent bite irregularities which can be a result of many different factors. This includes genetics, early loss of primary teeth, and even damaging oral habits. The American Association of Orthodontics recommends children should have a full orthodontic evaluation by age seven to determine if any issues should be corrected by Phase One Orthodontics. What Is Phase One Orthodontics?
Also known as interceptive orthodontics, this treatment usually occurs from age 6-9. This is when young patients are typically losing their baby teeth, making it an ideal time for their orthodontist to detect whether there are any disturbances with their jaw growth or tooth development. At this age, issues are much easier to address and work toward correcting because the permanent teeth are still coming in.
What Does Phase One Orthodontics Consist of?
This short phase of orthodontics can be utilized to enhance the growth of your child’s jaw and create space to guide the development and eruption of permanent teeth into their proper locations. Usually, this phase of treatment will last 9-12 months. Depending on a patient’s needs, the following may be used:
- Functional appliances
- Expansion appliances
- Space maintainers
- Headgear
- Specialized retainers
- Limited braces (only on select teeth)
Who’s a Good Candidate for Phase One Orthodontics?
The orthodontist will have a discussion with you and your child about their readiness for this type of treatment. Children who have not developed a good oral hygiene routine, have existing oral health issues, or are unwilling to comply with specific food restrictions may not be ready. You will be able to work with your child’s orthodontist to determine when the right time is to begin treatment.
Children with moderate to severe jaw or tooth issues at a young age often need this treatment. If your child has one or more of the following conditions, they may benefit from Phase One Orthodontics:
- Crossbite
- Overcrowding
- Open bite
- Flared upper teeth
- Overbite
- Underbite
- Spacing issues
- Finger sucking habits
Phase One Orthodontics doesn’t mean braces for baby teeth. Instead, it allows your child’s orthodontist in Roswell to begin correcting their teeth early on. Ultimately, it will help your little one develop a healthy smile they are happy to share with the world!
