Aligner Advice: 6 Things You Should Know Before Starting Invisalign

Before you sign on the dotted line, it’s important to do some homework on the orthodontic treatment you’re considering. For example, what does the initial consultation look like? Are there any changes you need to make to your day-to-day routine? Is there anything you can’t eat or drink? Fortunately, we’re covering six things you should know before starting Invisalign right here, so all you need to do to learn the answers is read on!

1. Putty Impressions Are a Thing of the Past

Previously, getting braces meant dealing with putty impressions. Although effective, many patients shared the sentiment that they were uncomfortable and made it difficult to breathe. Don’t worry – those are a thing of the past! Now, digital impressions are used, which are effective, quick, and comfortable.

2. You Need to Wear Your Aligners for 20+ Hours a Day

Patients often assume that – since the aligners are removable – they can take them off whenever they want. That’s not the case. Each day, you’ll only have a few hours of aligner-free time, which should be used to eat and complete your oral hygiene regimen. If you take them out for extended periods of time, then there’s a chance that you’ll fall off-track with your treatment plan.

3. Brushing Your Teeth After Each Meal Is Crucial

Usually, brushing your teeth each morning and evening is all that’s needed to prevent decay. With Invisalign, you need to complete your oral hygiene regimen after each meal and snack. Otherwise, the residual food particles in your mouth will get trapped in place by your aligners, increasing your risk of oral health problems.

4. Other Orthodontic Accessories May Be Needed

The term “clear aligners” is often used interchangeably with “Invisalign.” However, more complex cases of malocclusion often require additional orthodontic accessories, like attachments and rubber bands. The good news is that they are nowhere near as noticeable as traditional braces, and they help patients with more moderate overcrowding straighten their teeth without any metal.

5. You Should Switch Your Aligners Before Bed

Depending on your unique treatment plan, you will progress to the next set of clear aligners in the series every 7, 10, or 14 days. When that day comes, make the transition at night. That way, you sleep through the initial soreness.

Tip: Taking an OTC pain reliever about 30 minutes before bed and sticking to soft foods at breakfast the next morning will also help keep any pressure or soreness at bay!

6. You Can’t Drink Coffee with Your Aligners In

Despite what you may have heard, you cannot drink coffee with your aligners in – even iced coffee. Doing so may seem harmless, but it can result in significant stains, and it increases your risk of enamel erosion considerably. So, you’ll need to enjoy this caffeinated beverage alongside your breakfast or lunch instead.
