Candy without Consequences: Orthodontic-Safe Halloween Treats
October 13, 2023
As the night air fills with the chill of the otherworldly and the spooktacular, you know Halloween is here. Tasty treats rise from their packaging and pour from ovens and blenders. For someone who is currently undergoing orthodontic treatment, this could seem like a nightmare. However, if you know what to look for, you just might come out of fright night intact.
If you want to know the tastiest and safest treats for orthodontic patients, continue reading. Below you’ll find five delights to tantalize your tastebuds without breaking your braces.
1. Chocolates
Chocolate is a staple of all things Halloween from Hershey’s to Lindt. This delectable treat not only melts in your mouth to avoid damaging your braces but also may fight cavities! Don’t go grabbing all the kisses off the shelf just yet, though.
Milk chocolate is still high in sugar. Instead, opt for dark chocolate. The higher the percentage of cocoa, the better it is for your teeth!
2. Peanut Butter Cups
Peanut butter cups, like the ones from Reece’s are perfect for Halloween snacking. They come with a generous portion of peanut butter which has a little protein and magnesium to support tooth health. They’re also very soft and won’t hurt braces.
As with chocolates, this comes with a caveat. Try to indulge in natural brands that use higher percentages of cocoa in their chocolate and that have less sugar overall. This is the best way to enjoy this snack without feeling the sugar pains in your smile.
3. Soft Cookies
It’s hard to say no to a fresh-baked cookie. So don’t! Cookies like dark chocolate chip and Snickerdoodles use more tooth-healthy ingredients like dark chocolate and cinnamon.
To support braces and other orthodontic treatments, try to eat them while they’re soft and chewy. The softer the cookie, the easier it will be to eat with braces and wash away with some water.
4. Cheese Puffs
Candy and sweets aren’t the only Halloween treats out there. Cheese puffs are light, airy, and have a satisfying crunch that won’t interfere with your orthodontic treatments. As with all things, it’s important to remember moderation.
After eating your fill, be sure to brush your teeth and rinse with some warm tap water. The biggest downside to puffs is their ability to stick to your teeth. While this can be a deal-breaker with candies, the puffs dissolve well with water and can be brushed away with little fuss.
5. Milkshakes
Three words: frosty chocolate milkshakes. If that doesn’t set off some sweet snack vibes, nothing will. These can be high in sugar thanks to the syrups used to create them. However, they are liquid and can therefore be consumed with a straw.
This will pull the delectable froth away from your teeth, allowing you to enjoy it without even touching your orthodontic treatments.
Halloween is about more than sugar and candy. It’s about the spirit of creativity and the fun of scares and imagination. Get creative with your snacks on Halloween and mind your braces. If you need guidance, you can always call your orthodontist. Don’t let your treatment get in the way of your fun on Halloween, there’s still plenty to enjoy!
